Sex, Lies, And Videotape (1989)

Adultery, Self-centeredness, And Stupidity

- Ann (Andie MacDowell) has problems and does not want to have sex. Ann's husband John (Peter Gallagher) is boffing Ann's sister Cynthia (Laura San Giacomo). Ann starts to like John's sex-obsessed friend Graham (James Spader) with a particular fetish for videotaping. Yeah, as fun as that sounds, Sex Lies And Videotape (1989) is not much of an enjoyable film.

Director Steven Soderbergh's first film and winner of the Golden Palm at Cannes, Sex Lies And Videotape had me very disappointed. The film is obviously well crafted visually by Soderbergh and the acting from all the major players is well done; however, the film does not leave a lot to really appreciate. Dysfunction, dysfunction, and more dysfunction - that is all the film offers. All the characters are frustratingly selfish, act out in fits of stupidity, and should be popping the Prozacs like Skittles.

Sex Lies And Videotape is another one of those films that features everybody living unhappily ever after in white suburbia's lap of luxury, not relatable at all and eternally unlikable.

Not my genre.
