Dumb And Pointless - But Funny
- Here in Minnesota, we have what some call "Minnesota Nice" - where most people treat others nicely and with a smile. Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey), an officer with the Rhode Island State Troopers, might have benefited from some Minnesota Nice....
Charlie is a nice guy - but he is maybe too nice and gets pushed around a lot by those who are not-so-nice. His wife cheated on him and left him.... and he just took it. Every day, he is constantly being walked all over on by everyone around him.... and he does nothing. Charlie's passive nature continuously defines his every action until one day he snaps and develops a second personality: Hank. When Charlie is assigned a relatively low-key job in escorting Irene (Renée Zellweger) to an upstate police station, he finds himself having to help Irene escape from some dangerous people who are after her. Naturally, this is no place for a nice and passive guy like Charlie.... So Hank enters the picture, making things worse as much as he is helping out.
Me Myself and Irene (2000) uses a lot of just plain shock humor to get a reaction out of its audience; and while much of it is just gutter humor and ultimately dumb, it gets a lot of positive reaction as well. Jim Carrey is to thank for the vast majority of this, his talent for physical comedy is amazing and he makes the film funny all by himself. Renée Zellweger is also enjoyable in this film, she is dynamite in her eye candy/damsel in distress role but she also has funny moments as well that take her outside of Carrey's on-screen shadow.
While mostly dumb, Me Myself and Irene is, as much as some people would not like to admit it, still a pretty funny movie.
