Music And Lyrics (2007)

Another Romcom Hit
For Hugh Grant

- I thought this film was - and I say this with an unblemished record of complete and absolute heterosexuality - really funny and sweet. No really, as I a sensitive fellow who can enjoy a nice, happy love story now and again I can say that Music And Lyrics delivers laughs and warms hearts at a higher level than most romantic comedies.

I also like Hugh Grant as a general rule. I think the guy is freaking hilarious and an overall good actor with a particular talent for delivering clever dialogue of which he fully exercises in Music And Lyrics ("We could even re-pot the fichus!"). Grant is not alone: Drew Barrymore is as charming as always, Brad Garrett stops in between TV sitcom gigs with a small but funny role, Kristen Johnston is a little overbearing but generally likable, and Haley Bennett's performance as Cora Corman almost steals the show (image a Britney Spears-like character, only stringed out and actually has a musical direction). This film also has a handful of nice songs that, while I might not ever go out of my way to purchase, are pretty charming and catchy.

Music And Lyrics does follow the usual romcom story blueprint to a 'T' - but it is an enjoyable hour and a half.

CBC Rating: 7/10
